The Importance and Uses of Montessori Sensorial Material

Red Rods – Montessori Sensorial Material

Montessori Sensorial Material

ExcellED Montessori Plus is a Montessori Preschool Daycare in Boerne for infants through 6-year old that leverages innovative methods to personalize learning.

The red rods are a materialized abstraction in the dimension of length. Montessori is all about moving from concrete to abstract, so accordingly, the Red Rods help a child visually discriminate differences in length, from 10cm to 100cm. Directly, they help children develop their visual discrimination. Indirectly, they are preparation for bigger math to come. This maze is just one of many extensions and a class favorite.

The Red Rods are introduced to children from 2.5 to 6 years of age. This is often after they have worked on preliminary sensorial materials, such as the Knobbed Cylinders, Pink Tower, and Brown Stairs. The direct purpose of the Red Rods is to develop the child’s visual and muscular perception of length.

At Excelled Montessori Preschool Daycare our goal is to grow lifelong learners who have the knowledge, creativity, and the 21st-century learning skills to excel in a world that is constantly changing. At ExcellED Montessori Plus, we take the Montessori model a step further by blending other project-based and team-based approaches like Reggio Emilia to develop the next generation of leaders. Our whole-child approach to learning includes creating a supportive environment and community where parents, children, and educators are viewed as partners throughout the learning process.

All children do not learn the same way and at the same pace. At ExcellED Schools, our goal is to leverage research-based instructional strategies to personalize learning for each student based on their learning styles, needs, and pace. Students play an essential role in their learning, and our goal is to provide them with age-appropriate developmental tools and a safe environment.
